Ratepayers Flush £17,500 Down the Drain for the Orange Order to Spend a Penny

Council Must Address Lack of Policy Around Hiring of Portaloos.

Sinn Féin Councillor Catherine Nelson has said council must develop a policy on the renting of portaloos for events.

This comes after she received a report from council officers which included a £17,000 spend with no accountability.

She said:

"It is unacceptable that over £17,500 of ratepayers money has been spent with no checks or accountability.

"The orange order, royal black institution and marching bands ran up a bill of over £17,500

"Any expenditure of ratepayers money should be open for scrutiny from those elected onto the council."

"There is also inconsistencies in price per unit depending on supplier. If council agree to provide portaloos Borough wide then they must go out to tender.

"Now that we have unearthed this we have called for a clear, fair and equitable process to be derived for all organisations requiring portaloos for events.

"This ensures a level playing field for all.
