Upper Bann MLAs deep concern at drugs find

Sinn Féin MLA John O'Dowd has praised member of community who removed cocaine, worth up to two and a half thousand pounds, from the streets of Lurgan.

Mr O'Dowd said:

"We are all too aware of the damage drugs have on society - not only as a result of addiction but by the crime associated with the trade.

"I welcome the swift actions of a member of the public who acted responsibly immediately removing the drugs package and taking it to the PSNI.

"Fortunately on this occasion it was an adult that found the package. However in a bustling area, near a doctors surgery and in the vicinity of three local schools it could well have been a young child.

"Cocaine is a Class A drug. It is highly addictive and has caused many deaths. Having this amount removed from our community will undoubtedly save lives and misery. However we have to challenge those dealing drugs here.

"We need the entire community to work together in order to defeat those who are intent on poisoning our people for a quick profit.

"I would appeal to anyone who has information on drugs to bring it forward to the relevant authorities and for those who are suffering through the misuse of drugs to seek help through the many agencies that offer support."
