Sinn Féin Councillor Maire Cairns Welcomes Go Ahead For New Leisure Centre

Speaking following the full meeting of council she said:

"This was initially proposed in 2010 so I am delighted that we are finally at this stage. Planning approval has been granted allowing us to cut the first sod in the New Year. The new centre will be open to all in 2020."

"This 30 million investment is the biggest capital project ever undertaken by this council and the state of the art leisure centre, which will offer panoramic views of the lakes, will host one of the largest gyms on this island as well as an eight lane fifty metre pool.

She continued:

"The project will create more than 500 jobs during the construction phase which is expected to deliver an estimated £6.5 million in direct wages to the economy, apprenticeships, work placements and job opportunities for the local community.

"In the long term the centre will signal a new era of improved health, wellbeing and sporting ambition. I want to thank all those who responded to the consultation which has ensured the leisure centre will reflect the wishes, desires and needs of the local community."
