Haughian Warns That Financial Pressures Should Not Compromise Road Safety

Published: 23 January, 2018

Speaking following reports on the financial pressures facing the Department of Infrastructure Councillor Keith Haughian has said that financial pressures must not compromise road safety.

He said:

"Financial pressures as a result of Tory/DUP austerity could seriously undermine local road safety. Sinn Féin recognise that there are significant financial pressures within the Department of Infrastructure and Roads Service. These pressures should not be a barrier to much needed local safety measures.

"Following on from a near fatality along this dangerous stretch of road, Sinn Féin raised concerns with the Department regarding the lack of pedestrian barriers on Lake Street and the need for traffic calming measures in both Lake Street and the Antrim Road.

"Residents have made it clear that the speed of traffic is a major concern. Unfortunately to date there has been no meaningful progress.

"Whilst a study has been done. Some road users continue to speed in the Lake Street and Antrim Road area. There are no traffic calming measures or pedestrian barriers in this area. I have raised this with the Department and made it clear that the people of the area deserve to be given the correct protection. Every step must be taken to prevent another serious accident in the area."
