Housing Executive should not act on behalf of Private Sector - Sorcha McGeown

Published: 14 January, 2019

Sinn Féin spokesperson Sorcha McGeown has expressed her frustration at the Housing Executive over their continued failure to provide new social housing in the Lurgan area.

Ms McGeown said :

"While the Housing Executive do not build social houses they are the commissioning agent for such houses and should be actively working with and encouraging Housing Associations to build new homes.

" I regret to report that they are not acting with the vigour required to deliver what is needed.

" I am increasingly frustrated over the failure of the Housing Executive to commission sufficient housing for the Lurgan area. Time and time again mothers with young children, families seeking housing, young people looking a roof over their head are being told by the Housing Executive to go to the private sector.

"It is not the function of the Housing Executive to act as a letting agent for the private sector, they are there to provide social housing and they are failing miserably to do so."

In conclusion Ms McGeown said :

"The answer to the housing crisis in Lurgan is to build more houses and provide homes for those in need."
